Point of Contact: Jane and Chris
We meet once a month on the second Tuesday morning in St Mary’s Church Hall. Our meetings last from 10.30am until 11.45am. We always start with coffee and biscuits and members pay £2 for each session.
Our programme is varied and we tend to run the talks ourselves. No one is obliged to offer a session, but if any member has a particular area they would like to talk about we are very happy to accommodate them in our timetable. We do have outside speakers and we are very grateful for the time they give to our group.
Talks since September have included a streaming of the Time Team programme about Looe Island. We do use You Tube for this as we have access to wifi. We chose that film because it was local to our area.
In November a speaker came and told us about the lead up to the Battle of Hastings and will return to tell us “What Happened Next.”
A social history talk was given by Jane on the Costume and Clothing of the period, including the Tudor period.
One of our group told us about a bishop from Rievaulx Abbey who was an important diplomat of his time.
Our February meeting was very unusual, as our speaker discussed how historical evidence and its interpretation changes over time. Future talks include The Black Death and its aftermath!
At the moment we are limited to 20 members in our current venue and are usually up to that number at our monthly meetings.
